Our Avocadoptie avocado orchard has 65 avocado trees, the vast majority of which give the Hass avocado. About a quarter of the trees are of the Bacon avocado type.
We planted these different varieties to promote cross-pollination between the trees and thus improve fruit yields. You can read more about it in this article.
De Bacon avocado
Unlike the Hass avocado, the Bacon avocado is less well known, but ranks a close second in terms of popularity.
The Hass avocado is the most popular and widely consumed avocado worldwide. Hass avocados are known for their distinctive pear shape, purple, bumpy skin and creamy, nutty flavour.
The Bacon avocado is known for its creamy texture, less oily, softer and mild flavour. The flavour is often described as buttery and less nutty than some other avocado varieties. The skin of the bacon avocado is smooth and soft.
Preference for Bacon or Hass avocados is very personal because of the different flavours. The Bacon avocado is incorporated into various dishes in the same way as other avocados, such as:
- Guacamole: bacon avocados are ideal for making guacamole because of their creamy consistency and mild flavour,
- Salads: slice Bacon avocado and add to salads for extra texture and flavour,
- Bread spread: mash the avocado and use it as a spread on bread or toast. Add some salt, pepper and lemon juice for extra flavour,
- Smoothies: add pieces of Bacon avocado to smoothies for a creamy texture and extra nutrients,
- Side dish: serve the avocado as a side dish with various dishes.
