At Avocadoptie we are always looking for environmentally friendly ways to protect our Hass avocadotrees and avocados from unwanted insects.
A common unwanted critter is the spider mite. It can cause significant damage to leaves and avocados. You can think of:
- Leaf symptoms such as discoloration, speckles or spots and leaf drop.
- Weakened growth and decline in avocado production.
- Fruit problems such as infections, rot and deformities.
- Web formation and sticky substances on leaves that create a sweltering environment for other pests.
Natural predatory mites
A new and innovative way for us are the Koppert Spical Ulti-Mite sachets. These sachets contain natural predatory mites that specifically target harmful spider mites that can affect avocados. By hanging these sachets in our trees, we offer our avocado trees powerful, biological protection without using harmful chemicals.
How does it work?
Predatory mites multiply in the sac and disperse in the crop over a period of several weeks. They puncture the prey with their sucking proboscis and suck it dry.
Using this natural control method is an important step in sustainable and responsible agriculture. It helps ensure the health of our trees and provide higher quality avocados.
