Just in time for summer, before the real heat starts, we planted new baby avocado trees on our campo. One advantage, avocado trees love sunlight and need at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. That will definitely come in handy during these months!
How do we plant baby avocado trees?:
- We buy already grown avocado plants, about a meter tall.
- Here we choose the Lamb Hass variety. This is the most beloved avocado in the world. With a wonderfully full nutty/buttery flavor.
- In the place where we plant the little tree, we make sure the soil is prepared: we dig a hole deep enough and make sure there is enough water and compost to give the little tree a nice spot. With a stick and ribbon, we make sure the little tree is protected from the wind. We protect the trunk underneath from bright sunlight, animals and garden tools by placing a cover around the trunk.
- Is the avocado tree standing: then we check if there is a water line near the tree. Usually there is a water line nearby where we make a new hole with a dripper. If not, we lay a new water line.
- The little tree is standing and getting water through the automatic watering system! Done you would think...? No, then it only begins ;). The care of the trees once they are standing is very important. Especially the first few days / weeks we keep an extra eye on the baby trees. Whether they look good, whether they make a growth spurt, whether they need extra or less water. Whether they are bothered by the sun, animals or other weather conditions.
- If the baby trees look like they are definitely going to survive, they go into our care checks with all the other trees: in a balanced water and fertilization schedule. Plus our personal checks for unwanted critters and in extreme weather conditions.
- Then it's just a matter of waiting for the baby trees to produce avocados. This can take between 3 and 5 years. During these years, care continues tirelessly and we trim the avocado tree where necessary so that it grows in a beautiful and also most vigorous form for the best fruit production.
