You definitely need patience, but growing an avocado tree from an avocado seed can be a fun project. Read below what you need and how to do it step by step.
How do you grow your own avocado tree?
Supplies:
• Ripe avocado,
• Knife,
• Toothpicks,
• Pot with soil,
• Sunny location
Steps:
- Remove the stone: carefully cut the avocado in half and remove the stone. Rinse the pit to remove any remnants of pulp.
- Insert toothpicks into the wick: insert 3-4 toothpicks into the side of the wick, at an angle of about 45 degrees. This will support the wick and ensure that the wick hangs partially in the water.
- Place the wick in a glass of water: place the wick with the toothpicks in a glass of water so that about half of the wick is under water. Make sure the flat side of the wick is under water and the pointed side is above water.
- Wait for root growth: place the glass on a sunny windowsill and change the water regularly. After a few weeks, you will probably see roots growing from the bottom of the wick.
- Repot to soil: once the roots are about 5-10 cm long, you can transplant the wick into a pot of soil. Make sure you place the wick in the soil with the roots down and that the top of the wick is just above the surface of the soil.
- Take care of the plant: place the pot in a sunny location and water the young plant regularly. Make sure the soil remains moist, but not soggy.
- Care as it grows: the plant will gradually grow and become stronger. Give it enough light and make sure the temperature does not get too low. You can also fertilise the plant occasionally according to the recommendations on the fertiliser packaging.
- Repot if necessary: as the plant grows, you may need to repot it to a larger pot to provide enough room for the roots.
Keep in mind that growing an avocado tree from a kernel requires a lot of patience, and it may take several years afterwards before the tree starts bearing fruit. Not all avocado seeds will germinate successfully, but it is a fun experiment to try.
